Freshwater vs. Saltwater Swimming: What to Know

Lakes and oceans aren't just different scenery — they swim differently, and demand different know-how.

Water is water, but swimming in a lake and swimming in the ocean are genuinely different experiences — physically, practically, and in terms of safety. Understanding how freshwater and saltwater differ helps you swim more comfortably in each, protect your skin and gear, and respect the distinct hazards of both. Here's what actually changes when you move between the two.

Buoyancy and how it feels

The most noticeable difference is buoyancy. Saltwater is denser than freshwater because of its dissolved salt, so it pushes back harder against your body — you float higher and with less effort in the ocean than in a lake. For swimmers, this can make saltwater feel easier and more forgiving, particularly for floating and resting, which is one reason long open-water swims are often done in the sea. Freshwater's lower buoyancy means you sit lower and have to work a little harder to stay up, which matters for weaker swimmers and is worth remembering when supervising kids in a lake versus the ocean. The extreme example is a hyper-saline body of water, where the salt concentration is so high that swimmers bob like corks, but even ordinary seawater versus lake water is a difference you can feel.

Safety differences that matter

The two environments carry different primary hazards. The ocean's defining danger is moving water: rip currents, tidal currents, shore break, and waves that can knock you down and disorient you. Surf beaches demand that you know how to spot and escape a rip current, read the waves, and respect the tides — skills covered in depth elsewhere on this site. Saltwater also brings marine life to be aware of, from jellyfish to the occasional sting, and the simple fact that the sea is vast and currents can carry you far from where you started.

Freshwater's hazards are quieter but no less real. Lakes and rivers can be deceptively cold below the warm surface layer, with sharp thermoclines that chill you the moment you dive deep — a setup that contributes to cold-water shock and cramping. Visibility is often poor, hiding submerged rocks, logs, and drop-offs, so feet-first entry into unknown water is the rule. Stagnant summer lakes can harbor blue-green algae, which is toxic to people and especially to dogs, and warm freshwater very rarely hosts dangerous microorganisms, so it's wise to keep your head up in warm, stagnant water and avoid getting it up your nose. Rivers add current and strainers. Neither environment is "safer" in the abstract; they simply ask you to know different things.

Effects on skin, hair, and eyes

Saltwater and freshwater treat your body differently. Saltwater is drying and can leave skin tight and hair stiff and tangled, though many people find its salt and minerals soothing for minor skin irritations. Freshwater is gentler in the moment, but lakes, rivers, and especially chlorinated transitions can carry their own irritants. In both cases, the fix is the same: rinse off with fresh water as soon as you can after swimming, which removes salt, minerals, algae, and anything else clinging to your skin and hair, and apply moisturizer afterward. For hair, rinsing before you swim so it absorbs clean water first, and conditioning after, reduces the damage. Goggles spare your eyes from salt sting and from whatever a lake holds, and they're worth wearing in either.

What it does to your gear

Salt is hard on equipment. Saltwater corrodes metal, degrades fabrics, and leaves residue that damages everything from swimsuits to electronics to boat fittings, so anything that goes in the sea needs a thorough fresh-water rinse and full drying afterward — swimsuits, sandals, masks, PFDs, and especially any metal hardware. Freshwater is far easier on gear, but it isn't free of consequences: lake water can leave gear smelling musty if it's not dried properly, and the real concern is ecological. Gear moved between freshwater bodies can transport aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels, so the clean-drain-dry routine matters most when hopping between lakes and rivers.

Choosing and enjoying both

There's no need to pick a side — each has its place. Saltwater offers easy buoyancy, the drama of surf and tide, and the vast openness of the sea, at the cost of stronger currents and harder wear on your body and gear. Freshwater offers calmer, often warmer and clearer water, gentler effects on skin, and the intimate scale of a lake or river, at the cost of poorer visibility, hidden cold, and the occasional algae bloom. Knowing how each behaves lets you swim smarter in both: float and ride the swell in the ocean while respecting its currents, and ease into a lake feet-first while keeping an eye on its temperature and clarity. A few habits carry across both: enter unfamiliar water feet-first, keep a clear sense of where you'll get out, supervise weaker swimmers closely given freshwater's lower buoyancy, and respect the ocean's currents and tides above all. Rinse off afterward either way, and your skin, hair, and gear will thank you.
