At 1,943 feet deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and one of the clearest in the world. It fills the collapsed caldera of Mount Mazama — a volcano that erupted and caved in about 7,700 years ago — and is fed only by rain and snow, which gives the water its astonishing deep-blue color.
