Editor's Notes
The holy well beside Binsey's little church, associated with the 8th-century St Frideswide, is by tradition the 'treacle well' of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland — 'treacle' being an old word for healing balm. Pilgrims visited it for cures for centuries, and Carroll knew it well from nearby Oxford.
